… that’s the days until October 31st – Halloween 2010.

The history of Halloween is one of the most intriguing of all the holidays. Oddly enough, the word Halloween was originated in the Catholic Church, and was initially known as All Saints Day, or All Hallows Eve.

This site is dedicated to bringing you ideas old and new to make this Halloween the best one ever. From party games, to cool costume ideas, food tips and cooking ideas, let us help you make Halloween 2010 a night to remember!

Modern pagans and Wiccans today have returned to the history of Halloween in their celebrations. They observe October 31st as Halloween or Samhain, and honor it as their New Year. This is the day believed to be when the veil that separates the living and the dead is at its thinnest. Samhain is also the day that the pagan god dies, to be re-born again during Yule. These pagans use Samhain as a day to remember and honor dead loved ones. It is a celebration of the eternal cycle of reincarnation.

Amaze your Friends with our Halloween Trivia

Halloween is one of the most popular holidays of the year, and for good reason.  Few holidays have such a long and rich, not to mention creepy history! As you celebrate Halloween this year, surprise your friends with your spooktacular knowledge about the origins and legends of this dark and exciting holiday.

Origins of Halloween
The celebration of Halloween, also known as All Hallow’s Eve in Celtic culture, was brought over to America in the 1800s by European immigrants and can be traced back over 2000 years to Ireland.

In their culture October 31st was the last day of summer, and according to Celtic beliefs, a very dangerous time for the living.  It was believed that on this day, the spirits of the dead roamed the world of the Iiving in search of human hosts to possess.  To prevent this, the Celts dressed in ghoulish costumes so that the spirits of their ancestors would not recognize them as being human.  And so the tradition was born!

Fun Trivia
Orange and black are the colors of Halloween because the color orange traditionally represents the Fall harvest and the color black is associated with death.

There are no words in the dictionary that rhyme with orange, the color of pumpkins.

The biggest pumpkin on record weighed over 1300 pounds — that’s one big jack-o-lantern!

Originally, jack-o-lanterns were made from turnips or beets.

Over 93% of children under the age of 12 will go trick or treating this year, and over 50% of adults will dress up.

In 2009, the top 10 costumes for kids were: princess, witch, spider-man, pirate, pumpkin, vampire, Disney princess, star wars characters, tinker bell and batman.  The top 10 costumes for adults were: witch, vampire, pirate, clown, wench/tart/vixen, cat, devil, scary costume/mask, athlete and police officer.

Americans spend over $1.5 billion each year on Halloween costumes, and over $2.5 billion on candy.  To meet the demand, over 35 million pounds of candy corn will be made this year.

90% of parents admit that they swipe candy from their children’s trick or treat bags after Halloween.

Weird Trivia

Halloween stirs up all kinds of phobias, and if you are feeling creeped out by the festivities this year, you may suffer from one of the following:

•    Fear of cats = ailurophobia
•    Fear of cemeteries = coimetrophobia
•    Fear of ghosts = phasmophobia
•    Fear of Halloween = samhainophobia
•    Fear of spiders = arachnophobia
•    Fear of the dark = nyctophobia
•    Fear of witches = wiccaphobia

It was believed that black cats were witches’ familiars and protected them.

Vampire bats do exist, but not in Transylvania.  They are typically found in Central and South America where they feed on horses, cattle or birds.

If you stare into a mirror at midnight on Halloween, legend says you will see the face of your future spouse.

It is also believed that if you see a spider on Halloween, it is the spirit of a loved one watching over you.

Finally, if you have tattoos, a unibrow or unusually long middle fingers, then you just might be a werewolf, otherwise known as a lycanthrope.  Creepy!
